Termites
|
Termites - a concern in 49 out of 50 states
There are about 2000 known species of termites throughout the world. In the U.S., Subterranean Termites, including Eastern, Western, Desert and Formosans, which build underground nests, are a concern in every state except Alaska. Subterranean termites are extremely destructive, because they tunnel their way to wooden structures (like your home), into which they burrow to obtain food. Termites all share a virtually insatiable appetite for wood and other cellulose-containing materials. Given enough time, they will feed on the wood until nothing is left but a shell. Termites are highly social insects that live in large colonies where populations can reach more than one million. A colony consists of several structurally differentiated forms living together as castes (including reproductives, soldiers, and workers) with different functions in community life.
In the spring, winged reproductives leave the parental nest in swarms to create a new colony. The swarming lasts less than an hour, so it's very likely you'll never even see it. The winged reproductives themselves look quite a bit like flying ants, for which they are often mistaken. |
 |
|
Those "Ants" Might be Termites
Both ants and termites have two pairs of wings, but ants' wings are different sizes while the termites' wings are all the same size. Also, ants have narrowed waists and elbowed antennae while termites have thick waists and short, straight antennae that resemble strings of beads. Don't be fooled by color or size. Ants can vary in size, and winged termites can be brown or black like ants. |
Look for Signs
You're more likely to discover you have a termite problem by discovering the evidence they leave behind rather than the actual termites themselves. If you encounter any of these telltale signs, there's a good chance termites are busy munching on your home:
- Piles of small, delicate wings shed by reproductives
- Small piles of sawdust
- Mud tubes built by termites for above ground travel
- Damaged or hollow sounding wood
- Pinholes in drywall or wallpaper
Of course, it's quite possible to have a hidden termite problem even if you never notice any of these signs. The best way to be sure is to call Superior Pest and Termite, LLC and schedule a complete inspection of your home.

Fleas
|
Your flea free home.
Step inside your flea free home. Say hello to your flea free pet. Stroll through your flea free yard. Sound like fun? The following information can show you how it will all become a reality. You'll learn about the products Superior Pest and Termite, LLC will use, plus ways you can help keep fleas from coming back.
Where fleas can hide indoors.
Carpets, rugs, tile floor joints, furniture, cracks between wood flooring, pet bedding, pet resting spots, even under furniture cushions. And while adult fleas are most obvious, pre-adult fleas can account for as much as 99% of an infestation. These young fleas are just waiting to grow into another infestation. That's why fleas must be stopped in all four life cycle stages - egg, larva, pupa and adult.
Why they can't run.
Superior Pest and Termite, LLC has the products and expertise needed to create a flea-free environment. Indoors it starts with an application of SuspendSC® Insecticide, Precor® Insect Growth Regulator (IGR), Petcor® Flea Spray and the PreFlea® Continuous Action collar. Here's how this flea control team works:
|

Why control fleas early? Because adult fleas make up only 1% of a typical population. |
- SuspendSC® Insecticide stops fleas in the adult stage, ridding your home of the fleas you can see.
- Precor® IGR prevents the pre-adult fleas you don't see from turning into breeding, biting adults for up to seven months. Applied early in the season, Precor® IGR can also stop a flea infestation before it starts.
- Petcor helps keep your pet flea free by killing adult fleas and keeping flea eggs from hatching.
|
Together, SuspendSC® , Precor® IGR, Petcor® and PreFlea® offer fast, long-lasting control. And you won't have to worry about lingering odors, staining, or unsightly residue, either. It's the combination you need for a flea free home.
Your flea free pet.
Superior Pest and Termite, LLC is interested in long-term flea protection. That's why there's Petcor® Flea Spray. It's just what you need to help keep your pet flea free. |
|
Keep fleas from coming back.
Every time your pet comes in from outside, it may bring in more fleas. Regular applications of Precor® will help. It contains Precor® Insect Growth Regulator to stop flea eggs from hatching for up to 42 days, plus an insecticide that kills adult fleas for up to seven days. And it's the only on-animal spray that can be used as needed.
Superior Pest and Termite, LLC will show you how to apply Petcor® and the PreFlea® collar properly. Then remember to follow the application instructions carefully every time you apply. And be sure to ask if you have questions.
Your flea free yard.
Because fleas can thrive outdoors, your yard may need to be treated with a residual pesticide. It quickly kills fleas and many other outdoor pests, remaining effective for over two weeks. Since it doesn't harm plants, it can be used right where fleas like to hide. And there's no visible residue or lingering odor, either.

Where do we go from here?
As you can see, Superior Pest and Termite, LLC has what it takes to make your house, pet, and yard fleas free. Next, we're going to look at your role in the whole process.
How you can help.
Even though your pest control professional has everything under control, your help is also needed. Here are specific steps you should take before and after a flea treatment.
Before the treatment:
Vacuum all rugs, carpets and furniture - especially between and under cushions. Then seal or dispose of the vacuum bag in an outside receptacle.
- Clean and clear all floors, even closet floors. Mop all tile and vinyl floors
- Remove all decorative items, pillows, pet food, water dishes and children's toys from under beds and furniture.
- Remove all pets. Fish bowls and aquariums may remain if properly covered and the air pump is turned off, during treatment, but ask your pest control professional for specific directions.
- Wash or dispose of all pet bedding. If laundering, wash pet bedding separately from other linens.
- Mow your lawn and make sure everything on the ground outside has been removed.
- Show Superior Pest and Termite, LLC where you pets sleep, rest, and eat.
After the treatment:
Follow the specific instructions of Superior Pest and Termite, LLC to find out when you can return to your home.
- Resume normal vacuuming 24 hours after your home has been treated to give the insecticide time to work.
- Continue vacuuming every 3-4 days for 2-3 weeks. The vacuum's mechanical pressure will improve the effectiveness of the insecticide by stimulating un-hatched fleas to emerge from their protective pupae cases.
It's normal to see some adult fleas for up to 3-4 weeks after the treatment. Don't be alarmed. Flea pupae are protected from insecticide by their cocoons, emerging as adults over a period of 1-3 weeks. Once exposed to the insecticide residual, they will also be eliminated. Continue vacuuming frequently for 2-3 weeks at an interval of 3-4 days.
If you have any questions, be sure to call Superior Pest and Termite, LLC for more information. |
Ants
|
Ants are becoming a major problem all over the country. They can be difficult to control, but there are some things you should know about how ants' behavior can lead to big headaches for you and your home:
|
 |
|
-
Entry: Ants can enter through even the tiniest cracks seeking sweet or greasy substances in the kitchen pantry or storeroom areas.
-
Scent trails: Ants leave an invisible chemical trail known as pheromones for others to follow once they locate the food source.
- Nest locations: They can nest about anywhere in and around your house; in lawns, walls, tree stumps, even under your homes’ foundation.
-
Colony size: Can number from 300,000 to 500,000 and whole colonies can uproot and relocate quickly when threatened.
-
Nature's way of protecting the colony: With comparative freedom from natural enemies, a colony can live a relatively long lifetime. Worker ants may live seven years and the queen may live as long as 15 years
-
Why call a professional?: Most do-it-yourself approaches only kill the ants you see, whereas a truly effective treatment will penetrate and destroy their nest to prevent them from returning. Also, home remedies don't account for the fact that different kinds of ant infestations require different treatments.
Ant Control: There are two aspects of controlling ants, things you can do and things Superior Pest and Termite, LLC will do.
Things you can do to control ants from invading your home: Keep food in sealed containers. Keep fruit in the refrigerator. Rinse out empty soft drink containers or any containers that may have been used for a drink containing sugar. Reduce outdoor ant populations where possible.
What Superior Pest and Termite, LLC will do: SPT will apply bait to cracks and crevices; the bait is slow acting, so that there is time for the bait to be carried back to the colony; where it will be shared with the other ants, thus destroying the colony. A perimeter treatment with residual insecticide will be used to keep foraging ants from entering. |
Rodents
|
What are rodents?
- Some rodents are destructive pests that can spread disease, contaminate food and destroy property.
Where are rodents found?
Rodents are found throughout the world, wherever food and water sources exist and can be difficult to keep out of homes regardless of size or species. In fact, rats can squeeze through openings as small as a quarter, and mice can squeeze through holes the size of a dime.
Why should I be concerned about rodents?
Rodents, which can be hard to control, may also be harmful, contaminating food and spreading diseases. Mice alone contaminate 10 times the amount of food they actually consume. |

 |
|
| The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) states that 406 cases of hanta virus pulmonary syndrome, one of the many diseases carried and transmitted by various rodent species, have been reported in the United States since the disease was first recognized in 1993. Thirty-six percent of all reported cases have resulted in death. Additionally, rodents can carry fleas known to spread various types of plague and other diseases such as Lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus (LCMV). The house mouse is the primary carrier of LCMV, which causes symptoms such as headache, fever, chills, muscle aches and even meningitis (inflammation around the brain and spinal cord). Typically, however, LCMV has little effect on people with normal immune systems, but has been known to cause serious infections in people with weakened immune systems. Women who become infected with LCMV during pregnancy may experience severe complications. |
How can I help prevent a rodent infestation?
Superior Pest and Termite, LLC and CDC recommend the following tips for rodent control in and around the home:
- Store food in secure rodent-proof containers. Wash dishes and cooking utensils immediately after use.
- Seal all unintentional holes, gaps and cracks in your home or garage that are larger than 1/4 of an inch.
- Install weather strips at the bottom of exterior doors.
- Store firewood as far from the home as possible.
- Remove any piles of debris near the foundation of the home.
- Trim branches, plants and bushes that hang over the home.
- Ensure that gutters are directing water away from the home.
What do I do if I suspect a rodent problem around my home?
Because of the health concerns related to rodents, anyone suspecting a problem should contact a licensed pest management professional. Superior Pest and Termite, LLC can help identify and eliminate rodent problems.
During and after severe weather conditions like hurricanes and tornados, rodents often relocate to new areas in search of food, water and shelter. Evacuees re-entering their homes after extended absences in areas affected by severe storms should take precautions when cleaning rodent urine, droppings or nesting materials, and take steps to eliminate the infestation by removing rodent food sources and nesting sites with the advice of a licensed pest management professional.
To learn more or to schedule an inspection, call Superior Pest and Termite, LLC at (281) 419-4059. To find more information on rodent-related diseases, visit www.cdc.gov. |

Mosquitoes lay their eggs in or near water, depending upon the genus. Eggs laid above the water line will hatch when the water level rises; sometimes several years later. In summer the mosquito can reach maturity in less than a week. Mosquitoes can fly up to 10 miles, but they generally stay near a breeding area in grass or plants. It is true that male mosquitoes do not bite. The female, however, does bite and feeds off blood before she lays her eggs. Mosquito bites are capable of transmitting diseases such as encephalitis and malaria; fortunately, cases are fairly rare. Dogs and cats can get heartworm from mosquito bites. There is also a chance of secondary infections from scratching mosquito bites, especially with children
|
 |
Prevention: What you can do. Without water mosquito eggs cannot hatch; remove old tires, buckets, tin cans and other water-catching devices. Change water in bird baths and wading pools once or twice a week. Clean out roof gutters holding stagnant water. Keep grass around bodies of water mowed. Superior Pest and Termite, LLC will apply granules and liquid insecticide to areas prone to mosquitoes; bushes, vines tall grassy areas that are around your home. Superior Pest and Termite, LLC will also make recommendations to help ease the populations around your property.
